United Breaks Guitars
Guitar Musings — Came across the video below on YouTube. I’ve only flown with my guitar once and that was pre-911 when you could bring your guitar as a carry on. This is a fine example of why you need to invest in a good flight case and insure your guitars. I agree with the lyrics, they are liable and it sad to see that customer service is pretty much dead in the airline industry. This is a pretty catchy song too and well written. I don’t think this would have been as effective if it wasn’t so well written but it looks like he might get his claim fulfilled (see links below) after all the attention this song has gotten. ...

NEWS: Airline's Taylor carnage immortalized in song
i heart guitar — When musician Dave Carroll checked in his beloved Taylor guitar on a flight from Halifax to Nebraska for a short tour, he never could have imagined the horrible fate that would befall the guitar before his very eyes during a stopover in Chicago. ...

United Airlines Breaks Guitars
The Jazz Guitar Blog — When guitar player Dave Carroll travelled to Nebraska for a tour with his band Sons of Maxwell, he witnessed his Taylor guitar being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. The guitar was severely damaged and after a lot of communication he was told that United wouldn’t compensate him for his loss. He promised the last United person he spoke with to make 3 songs and videos about the way United Airlines handles luggage. Here’s the first video: ...

Guitar Lovers Beware of United Airlines
The Guitar Hunter — While I'm taking a break from posting information about my guitar hunts I thought I'd share this story with you. Dave Carroll of the band Sons of Maxwell had his $3,500 Taylor acoustic destroyed by United Airlines baggage handlers. He's planning to write 3 songs and produce videos for them and here's the first. ...

"United Breaks Guitars" By Dave Carroll
Japan Guitar Journies — I don't know how any person or organization can lay claim to your property for multiple hours, claim to care for it, force you to let them do it and then claim that they are not responsible for what happens to it, especially after you have paid out the yin-yang to use their services. But that's just what you'll hear from any airline. I myself have had Northwest employees tell me in the rudest of tones that they are not responsible for the condition of my baggage regardless of how much they handle it. That my guitar might be broken by their baggage handlers and if it is they aren't responsible or accountable. ...

United Breaks Taylor Guitars
Guitar and Music News — Here’s a song created by Dave Carroll about his Taylor Guitar that was destroyed in to pieces by United Airline baggage handlers while the Sons of Maxwell were on tour. He vowed to write a song about it and tell the whole world after United shrugged the whole incident off and never reimbursed him for the damages. And now the song has reached over 500,000 views in YouTube and has been featured in some local news. Talk about a PR nightmare. ...

Dave Carroll’s Songwriting Revenge
Taylor Guitars — We’ve been fans of award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter Dave Carroll and his band, the Sons of Maxwell, for a few years now (we reviewed their CD Sunday Morning back in the fall 2006 issue of Wood&Steel, which you can find here.) Little did we know — nor did Carroll for that matter — that he would use a bad airline experience as creative fodder for a song and video that literally overnight would generate more publicity than he ever could have expected as an artist. The airline incident, for those of you who haven’t seen the video, is one that would send a pang of nausea to the stomach of any Taylor owner. In ...

The Classical Guitar Blog — I’m an avid weightlifter. As such, I read a lot of information online about training an nutrition. With an article popped up on Combat Psychology and Sports Performance I was intrigued. As I read it, I realized this article is about any sort of situation in which anxiety takes hold. While most examples are about sports or MMA or lifting, the article can easily be applied to music performances. It’s a great read. Derek Sivers says that it’s about you, not them. When you purchase a product that contains information, it’s not about what kind of person they are, it’s about how good the ...

United Breaks Guitars
Guitar Noise — Later next week I’m taking a couple flights on United Airlines. But if I had seen this video before buying my ticket, I probably would have chosen a different airline. Let’s face it, flying is expensive for most people. Safety and comfort are the most important things to consider, but once you get the price of the ticket out of the way, you still expect a certain level of customer service. If you make a mistake it’s up to you to fix things. This is now true for corporations more than ever before. You may spend millions of dollars building a corporate image but most people are going to go along with what they read on Twitter and see on Youtube. Get ...

The “United Breaks Guitars” song relates Carroll’s story of travel trouble as his guitar was broken at the hands of a major airlines. As he tells it: “In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. United Breaks Guitars
A Guitar Teacher's Lesson Notebook — I hate flying with my guitar. Approaching the ticket-taker at the gate with my Martin in hand always feels like I’m leading it to its death, dreading this: “Oh, I’m sorry sir, it’s a very full flight, but we can hand-check that for you.” Thankfully, so far I’ve always been able to shoehorn it into a coat closet or once, incredibly, into the captain’s cabin. This was post-9/11, folks. The stewardess who made that happen will be strumming a 1934 Martin OM in heaven some day. Anyway, this guy wasn’t so lucky. Hilarious video. Hey, at least it wasn’t a Martin: Thanks to Farida ...

Summer NAMM 2009 Review
Rock House Blog — Well I made it back in one piece from attending this year’s summer NAMM show in Nashville TN. I have to start off by saying that I was a bit skeptical about this show because I heard that many of the top manufacturers and dealers were not going to attend. I have attended NAMM shows for over 10 years and this was the first time that Fender, Marshall, ...

The second video and song details Carroll’s tenuous relationship with Ms. Irlweg, the United Airlines customer service employee who thwarted Carroll’s appeals.   The first in the trilogy, “United Breaks Guitars”, relates Carroll’s story of travel trouble as his guitar (710ce) was broken at the hands of United Airlines. As he tells it: “In the spring of 2008, Sons of ...
